Between 2009-2012 the state of Colorado has cut close to $1 billion dollars in public education funding.
Initiative 22 is a statewide ballot initiative, and the only citizens initiative this year, to put a question on the November 2011 ballot asking Colorado voters if they would consider increased income tax to better fund preschool through twelfth grade education. Specifically, the measure, if passed in November, would raise state individual income tax rates to generate an additional $950.1 million a year to pay for Senate Bill 13-213, Senator Mike Johnston’s proposed overhaul of the state’s school funding system passed earlier this year.
Currently, we are working to gather 87,000 valid signatures in order to simply get the question on the ballot. The deadline to sign petitions is Monday, July 29.
If the measure get on the ballot and passes in November it would mean $5 million annually to Eagle County Schools (after $14.5 million in cuts over the past 4 years leaving us at funding levels lower than in 1980).
